Andrew J. Russell, American, 1830-1902
Photographer Andrew J. Russell began his careeras an artist. As a commissioned officer in theCivil War, he was assigned to special duty asphotographer for the U.S. MilitaryRailroadConstruction Corps.
After the war, Russell went west to record images of the Union Pacific Railroad as it was builtwestward from Omaha, Nebraska. The result ofhis efforts is a collection of 650 10 x 13 inch glassplate negatives now in the Oakland Museum,Oakland, California.
